Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Reclining or weakly climbing vines.

Stems: Stems often swollen at the nodes, primary stems 10–60 dm long, green with a purple tinge or purple–spotted, glabrous proximally, puberulent or glabrate in the inflorescence.

Roots: Fibrous root system.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades lanceolate to ovate or broadly ovate, usually inconspicuously falcate, 6–18.7 cm long, 3–7.5 cm wide. Apex acute to acuminate or sometimes obtuse with a small mucronate tip. Base leaf bases often connate around the stem, base cuneate to broadly obtuse. Surfaces glaborous, occasionally with a few scattered hairs on Lower surfaces side of the younger leaves; blades coriaceous, purple–tinged or purple–spotted, especially along the midrib, with only the midvein evident. Margins slightly thickened, occasionally with a few scattered antrorsely hooked hairs 0.1–0.15 mm long. Midvein excentric, ± purple. Petioles 0.5–3.1 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescence terminal, with 30–88 flowers, 30–50 (–150) cm long, open, diffuse, sparsely to densely puberulent in the inflorescence, the hairs purple, 0.15–0.3 mm long; bracts green, purple–tinged or purple–spotted, lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate or the smallest ones subulate, those of central axis 2.5–11 mm long, those of branches and flowers 1.5–3 mm long; pedicels 6–18 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Sepals 2.8–3.5 mm long, lanceolate, purple, or green with a purple midvein, opaque, strongly reflexed in the proximal ¼, producing a large transverse bulge, distal part deeply navicular and usually weakly inrolled toward the apex, oriented at 0° to 10° angle to the pedicel, sparsely to densely puberulent, margins scarious and densely ciliate, apex long–attenuate. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 10; filaments strongly dimorphic, the antisepalous whorl usually erect, 4.5–5.5 mm long, the alternate greatly reduced, 0.6–1.3 mm long; anthers dimorphic, those of the antisepalous Stamens 0.8–0.9 mm long, those of the alternate Stamens 0.55–0.6 mm long, yellow. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule placentation free-central; styles 3 (–4).

Fruit: Capsules 2.5–3 mm long; ovoid. Seeds 0.9–1.1 mm long; orbicular–reniform; compressed; the surface transversely rugose; perisperm starchy; hard or rarely soft; true endosperm absent.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Rare; in mesic to wet forest.

Elevation Range: 640–1220 m.

Notes

  • Description digitized by Clyde Imada.
  • Description digitized from the Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawaii
  • Scattered in diverse mesic forest, 600-900 m, Maunakapu to Mount Ka'ala, Wai.anae Mountains, O'ahu, and mesic to wet forest, 500-900 m, Pelekunu to Kala'e, Moloka.i, southern half of Ldna'ihale, Ldna.i, and Makawao,Hamdkua, Olowalu Valley, and K6,anapali, Mau
  • Two varieties are recognized within Schiedea pubescens: var. pubescens [incl. S. nuttalii var. intermedia, S. n. var. molokaiensis, S. pubescen^s var. degeneri, S. p. var. hillebrandii, S. p. var. Ianaiensisf with puberulent to subglabrous inflorescences and ovate to broadly ovate leaves (Moloka'i, Ldna'i, and Maui); and var. purpurascens with densely puberulent inflorescences and narrowly lanceolate leaves that are sometimes somewhat falcate (O.ahu). Schiedeo pubescens is very closely related to S. nuttallii and differs primarily in its vining habit and nearly always puberulent inflorescences; this separation is not complete, however, since ,S. nuttqllii is puberulent on Kaua'i and S. pubescens is subglabrous on Ldna'i, Moloka'i, and Maui. Schiedea nuttallii vars. intermedia and molokaiensis are known from only fragmentary collections but appear to belong under S. pubescens, rather than,S. nuttailii.
